What is a Septic Tank?

Most properties are connected to a mains sewer, but there are exceptions. Any property that isn’t hooked up is usually connected to either a septic tank, a sewage treatment plant, or a cesspit. Where septic tanks differ from cesspits is the fact that one stores effluent while the other does not. A septic tank will allow liquors to flow through the tank and into the surrounding land or watercourse.

This happens via a soakaway and is designed to happen without causing any damage to the environment whatsoever. Wastewaters enter the tank and the flow is reduced through a series of baffles allowing the solids to sink to the bottom. Additionally, smaller particles float to the surface, creating a scum. By holding the water in the system, suspended solids are removed, and much of the sludge decomposes through natural aerobic and anaerobic processes.

In turn, the semi-treated liquor is allowed to exit the tank and leach into the nearby land via the soakaway.
